A big win for the UK against plastic packaging

Uncertainty over the future of the UK looms with newly announced Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his 'do or die' approach to Brexit, it's nice for industries that are heavily committed to a circular economy and reducing the use of plastic to have some good news.

It has been suggested that proposals have been made regarding taxing plastic packaging that have less than 30% recycled content - although this has created a division between waste management firms and packaging producers, however, it has been revealed that the majority of waste managers and local authorities backed the 30% threshold because of the simplicity of the system that could easily be policed.

There have also been suggestions over a three-band system, whereby products with a high level of recycled content would be exempt from any tax, while those producers of products with a 'medium' level will pay a reduced rate.

It's expected that these proposals will drive behavioural change across the majority of the industry, with legitimate remanufacturers benefitting the most and those who are committed to reducing the use of plastic in their packaging.
